"On His Way", 6x6"

I took a photo of my son Jordan crossing this bridge on his bike just a few weeks before he left for school in Colorado. I was on the brink of "empty nestdom", and felt it was symbolic.  He's on his way.

I think I'll keep this one.

The Year of the Cardinal, 6x6"

I will remember this season as the Year of the Cardinal-- every time I look out my window, my trees are filled with the most brilliant red imaginable.  Why are they flocking to my backyard?  Is it the safflower seed that I've filled the feeders with this time around?  Is this happening everywhere?  Time to pour a cup of tea and plant myself by the window for another show.

Red Hat Adventures (Triptych) 6x6 each

I have a demo coming up next week, so if you are in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, I hope you'll stop by!  The topic will be "Loosening Up Your Painting Style", and it will be put on by the Long Grove Art Guild on Wednesday, February 13 at 6:30pm in the Long Grove Village Hall.  Email Barbara at artandlit@msn.com to reserve your space.

The Survivors, 6x6"

I respect any flower that can withstand our drought-plagued summer here in the Midwest.  These tiny beauties are my tough survivors (I'm so proud of them!).

A Slice of Paradise, 6x6" (Sold)

What can I say?  It's sleeting outside, and I needed to paint a little corner of paradise.  Have you heard of the challenge site The Virtual Paintout? Every month, a new location on Google Earth is chosen, and artists  can look around virtually and find locations to paint!  This one is from Elba Island, off of Tuscany.  And it was a breath of fresh air for me!

Buzzing By, 6x6"

How many times have you lined up the perfect camera shot, only to have someone zoom into it at the last possible second?  That's what happened here-- but I was happier with the stealth cyclist in the shot!  I painted this one with a palette knife to keep it spontaneous and lively.  Just enough information to tell the story and then get out fast!

Harvard Yard, 6x6"

I captured this brief peaceful moment in my sketchbook when I was visiting daughter Emily in Boston.  I transferred it to a board and did an oil sketch of the scene, trying to keep it very spontaneous and impressionistic.  The scattered colorful chairs were a visual treat!

Das Kaffeehaus, 6x6"

This is a little cafe street scene in Germany, painted mostly with a palette knife to keep the figures very loose and open to the viewer's interpretation.  I haven't been to Germany, but I can imagine that this place creates quite a clatter!

A Sunny Day, 6x6"

This tiny portrait of a little girl in the sunlight was my entry into this week's Daily Paintworks Challenge.  I tried to keep this one very loose and impressionistic.  I often find this type of portrait more intriguing than a very detailed one.

I hope that opening a cocktail umbrella inside brings the opposite of bad luck!

Just Peachy, 6x6"

Here is another still life setup that I painted while on vacation.  Michigan peaches!  This one had to be done pretty quickly, using a palette knife.  So many hungry people in one house means that edible still lifes have a way of disappearing pretty quickly.

Cape Cod Morning, 6x6" (Sold)

Sometimes vacations can be hectic, but this time, I had the rare opportunity to sit on a screened-in porch with my niece and paint for a few days.  We'd put together a still life setup and go at it for a few hours at a time.  What a luxury!

Here We Are, 6x6"

So, here we are, the beauties that you've been waiting for all summer.  All it took was a little weeding, some pruning, a wee bit of watering, fertilizing, eye rolling, and tongue clicking.  But here we are, at long last.  Now go sit down and enjoy us!

Morning Reflections, 6x6" (Sold)

This was a really good challenge-- getting those cherry reflections in the silver almost made me cross-eyed!  I entered this one into this week's Daily Paintworks challenge.

Monday Morning, 6x6" (Sold)

Before I face all the errands and little chores of the coming week, I decided to set up a sunny still life to get things off on the right foot.  I forced myself to lay down just one stroke of paint at a time, and then just leave it!  No going back and fussing with it.  I'm forcing myself to be happy with an impression of what's in front of me.  I hope you like it!

Vase Buddies, 6x6" (Sold)

Sometimes a little knick-knack will call to me from the store's shelf.  Both of these little vases did just that this past week, and I couldn't resist.  I justify my purchases by painting them!
